While most models of engines are similar in principle, the process of functioning of an engine depends on the size of the engine as well as the vessel. There are three basic types of main engines: 3-cylinder direct-drive diesel engines (ODDIE) 3-cylinder direct-drive diesel engines are the most common type of diesel engine for propulsion. The power output of an ODDIE depends on the design of the engine, the horsepower of the engine, and the revolutions per minute (RPM) of the engine. In operation, the RPM of an ODDIE engine is typically controlled through the use of a governor. The type of governor depends on the class of the engine.
